      <image:caption>Having the help of a licensed professional while healing from emotional abuse can be beneficial. There are several different treatment modalities that are proven to be useful when healing from abuse:  EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing): an effective form of therapy for treating trauma and other responses that may come as a result of the abuse. EMDR works to release emotional experiences that are trapped in the nervous system through bilateral stimulation. Traumatic memories are reprocessed by the brain, resulting in painful feelings being exchanged for more resolved, peaceful feelings.  CPT (Cognitive Processing Therapy): aims to help people who feel “stuck” by their thoughts about the trauma. The therapist uses Socratic questioning and other strategies to help the client question his or her unhelpful thoughts about the trauma (e.g., self-blaming thoughts) in order to modify any maladaptive thinking. Therapists may particularly focus on safety, trust, power, control, esteem and intimacy as these are all areas that can be affected by traumatic experiences.  Somatic Experiencing: This approach uses a body-first method to address symptoms, with the idea that healing or freeing this physical experience of trauma can also help heal the emotional experience. It can be particularly helpful for physical symptoms related to trauma, abuse, and other emotional distress, such as digestive issues, chronic pain, etc. Somatic therapy may include yoga, meditation, breathing exercises, dance, grounding, and sensation awareness.  Music, Art, or Dance Therapy: Forms of art therapy can allow the client to tap into their sensory memory, allowing clients to process trauma visually when words fail them. These methods can be particularly helpful for people who have also experienced or witnessed abuse as a child. Art therapy can improve self-esteem and strengthen a sense of self. Creating art can also foster a sense of safety and well-being, which is crucial to recovery.</image:caption>

      <image:caption>I want to simply bring awareness to the fact that this body image battle takes up a LOT of mental space. And likely, you’ve been extremely unfair towards yourself.  In fact, I am sure you wouldn’t even say half of these things to another individual. So why say them to yourself?  Here’s an analogy that resonates with many of my clients. Imagine each day you are allotted a “full battery” of energy ( think like your phone battery). You wake up and have 100% life energy, (so long as you get a full night's sleep) and can use that set amount of energy expenditure anyway you like. But guess what? Not all energy is equal! In fact, negative energy (cough, cough the kind you use when berating your body and wishing you looked different) actually depletes your battery faster and makes it less efficient.  So now I want you to think again. How much of your battery is spent hyper focusing on body stuff?  50%? 75%? 99%?  I promise you aren’t alone in this. Once you gain awareness of this principle,  you begin to realize the opportunity cost of your mental real estate.  In other words, you begin to comprehend how much you could accomplish if you weren’t mentally preoccupied with how uncomfortable your body feels. Now, I say all this to help you buy into the idea that body compassion is worth it. You deserve to spend your days in peace, not hating every inch of you, and accepting the body you have.</image:caption>

      <image:caption>There are many different types of therapy practices that can be used during sessions, including Behavioral therapy, Art therapy, and Psychotherapy.  Behavioral therapy refers to a type of therapy that helps individuals work through negative or self-destructive behaviors. The purpose of a behavioral therapy such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), is to work towards changing negative thought patterns, which will then change negative emotions and unwanted behaviors.  CBT is one of the most used strategies to treat mental disorders such as anxiety, depression, eating disorders, etc. Another type of therapy than can be incredibly beneficial for women would be Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT). Like CBT, DBT focuses on the intertwinement of thoughts, emotions, and behaviors, but approaches these struggles in different ways. With DBT, the client focuses regulating their emotions, “sitting” with unwanted thoughts, and working through the unease of emotional turmoil.   Psychotherapy is another therapy technique used by many therapists that can greatly help women when starting their mental health journey. Psychotherapy is the process of learning about one’s mental illness. This includes learning about signs and symptoms of an illness, exploring emotions, and finding healthy coping strategies.  Art therapy is one type of therapy that might be overlooked, but should be taken into consideration when working with women. Art therapy can be incredibly beneficial as it incorporates a hands-on activity with talk therapy and exploring emotions that come up while completing the artwork. Art therapy has been shown to improve one’s social skills, self-esteem, and help individuals explore what matters most to them and how these things can be utilized in their daily life.</image:caption>

      <image:caption>Why has the pandemic been such a hard blow to our function as human beings? Why is social connection so important to us as a population? Looking at it biologically, we are wired from birth with a basic human need for physical touch, social interaction, and engagement to allow for our most optimal learning and development. When we are deprived of that social connection and physical touch, it can affect everything - from attachment styles to moods to physical and intellectual development as well. Research has shown that chronic social isolation and deprivation not only heightens mental health issues like depression, anxiety, and substance use, but it also adds to physical ailments such as higher blood pressure, heightened risks of heart disease and diabetes, and even increased memory and cognition issues as we age. And this does not even begin to address the emotional regulation or lack thereof that many have begun experiencing, as the pandemic has pushed many farther and farther outside of their previous window of tolerance.</image:caption>

      <image:caption>Our window of tolerance has been shrinking- taking less and less to move us out of stability and emotional regulation - and more and more things may likely be affecting both our joy and our basic function. Some of us may have become more anxious and angry about our current life circumstances, perhaps more out of control with our emotions, perhaps having less opportunity to process through with others, perhaps resulting in less connection and coping overall (hyperarousal). Others of us may have started shutting down, or disconnecting from our own emotions as we have been separated from others, our loneliness moving us toward isolation, depression, and further detachment (hypoarousal). To put it simply, we have not been able to function as we once did, and it has been both emotionally, physically, mentally and socially painful to try. I want you to realize that this is NORMAL; this is our body trying to tell us that we are going through something that hurts, and we need further support.</image:caption>

      <image:caption>The stress and loneliness stemming from isolation over multiple years now has had a vast effect on our mental and physical well being. Not knowing how the future will proceed, how do we start to address that? How do we start to heal? It starts by turning toward our basic human needs. According to Maslow’s hierarchy of needs, our motivation and growth as human beings is dependent on the following basic needs being met: our physiological needs of food, shelter, and clothing;  our safety needs (internal and external); our needs for a sense of love, belonging, and connection; and our needs for self esteem and self actualization of. Throughout this pandemic, many of us have been struggling to keep and maintain just the first one or two basic needs (see picture). It is no wonder that we have struggled then with motivation, energy, and connection to life!  We have been deprived of core human needs that keep us grounded in life, help us realize our own identity and being, and connect us to our potential. We can only return to that sense of motivation, engagement, and growth by meeting these basic human needs as best as we can amidst life obstacles. Connection and compassion are key here, and both within our wheelhouse of control.</image:caption>

      <image:caption>So how can we help meet our basic needs, and find our way back into our window of tolerance?  How can we initiate our own connection and compassion needs in healing? First, we can become more aware of when and how we are experiencing and reacting to pain and isolation. Rather than not acknowledging this pandemic and how it has affected us, we can be mindful of our emotions and responses.  What are you telling yourself when you are on your 5th zoom call of the day, when you are home sick again awaiting test results, when you can’t find your mask nor energy to go out socially? Is your internal dialogue saying “I don’t like this feeling”,  “I am so tired of feeling this way”, “I must be doing something wrong,” or “I shouldn’t be like this?” When we react and respond in negativity, we cut ourselves off from the connection and compassion that still exists in our own selves.  Mindfulness practices involve being present and aware of what we are doing and how we are thinking and feeling daily.  Pausing to connect with ourselves is a pivotal moment of self change, as it moves us from reacting to responding - to ourselves first over life.  A helpful mindfulness and self compassion tool is a simple daily  practice called RAIN.  This practice assists us in recognizing four daily steps we can take for our own self healing needs:  R = Recognize what is going on in your body (emotions, thoughts, body sensations) A = Allow the experience to be there, and sit with it as is (no judgment) I= Investigate with kindness why these emotions, thoughts, and sensations may be coming up  N = Nurture yourself through the process  (Perhaps you can place your hand over your heart to symbolically take in love and compassion for yourself.  Perhaps you can go for a short  walk, and focus on how your body feels to move, to breathe, and to be in nature. Perhaps you can listen to calming music, or engage in a gentle meditation or restorative yoga class.)  Mindfulness builds and expands awareness, empathy and compassion for yourself, much of which we have lost in previous years. You rebuild connections with the body and the self - which we ALWAYS will have, amidst pandemic life changes and beyond. And when your compassion is built first in you, only then do you have the strength to heal and share outward with others.</image:caption>

      <image:caption>The hormonal changes of menopause actually start in the time before your period ends. Many women will experience menopause sometime in their 50s but the period before (perimenopause) can start as early as your 30s and is most common in women in their 40s. And it can go on for years. Hormonal shifts start in this pre-menopause stage and women sensitive to hormonal changes, or who have struggled with mental health previously, may experience increased anxiety and depression. This season of life is complex, as many women are starting to have children later and may be ramping up their careers, and caring for aging parents, all at a time when their hormones start to fluctuate. And it’s common to shrug it off, and point to all the other life stressors, when you start to experience increased feelings of sadness and dread. Or maybe you are concerned and reach out to your medical provider. And they just tell you it’s “normal” or to “do more self care.” But they rarely mention, or provide education on, the effects of perimenopause. Women start to feel invisible as we age, no longer useful to society. And the lack of understanding and support around this change in life only serves to increase the feeling that we should keep ourselves quiet and small.</image:caption>

      <image:caption>If you experienced PMS, or the wide range of emotions that is pregnancy, then you have an idea of what perimenopause feels like. Except it’s considered “cute” when a pregnant woman is crying one minute and laughing while she eats a pint of ice cream the next minute. Not so much with perimenopausal women. Many women report mood fluctuations - being so anxious it’s hard to sleep at night and feeling so depressed during the day that it’s hard to function. The hormone swings in perimenopause can lead to symptomatic extremes. The increase in anxiety may lead to increased irritability and having a hard time just dealing with everything. And the depressive symptoms may lead to lowered self esteem and dread.</image:caption>

      <image:caption>Many women come to therapy to learn how to feel better. Their goal is to get rid of the uncomfortable feelings or learn to control them better. It is not possible (or preferable) to get rid of feelings. We have them for a reason and they serve us well. Learning to “control” emotions sounds like a slippery slope to wanting to just make them go away. What if we learned instead how to allow, accept and regulate our emotions? Instead of pushing them away, or becoming fused with what we are feeling, we can learn to acknowledge and accept what we are feeling. Only then can we do something about it. If you are sad but want to go out with friends, you can learn how to be sad AND keep your plans (and there is a high probability that the social connection will help relieve your sadness). If you are angry but want to lessen the intensity of your rage, you can learn how to breathe deeply and reduce your flight/fight/freeze response.  Tools You Can Use: • We recommend Tara Brach’s RAIN meditation practice to learn how to sit with uncomfortable feelings and to bring compassion to yourself and what you are experiencing. • Our blog on “letting it be,” has good tools to use when you are stuck in ruminating or your anxiety is ramping up. And Claire offers helpful tips to manage anxiety in her blog on treating anxiety without medication. • If you are feeling down, distraction can be a helpful tool to shift your mood enough to energize you.
