EMDR Consultation for Therapists

You’ve finished EMDR Basic training, including your 10 hours of consultation, and you’re wondering, “now what?”. Ongoing EMDR Consultation can help support you in becoming a more confident and competent EMDR therapist. Because you don’t stop having questions or doubts when you finish training.

Jennifer Vandegriff, LCSW is an EMDRIA Certified EMDR Therapist and Consultant in Training specializing in integrated trauma treatment for women. She has advanced training in perinatal mood and anxiety disorders, structural dissociation, Women Centered ADHD Treatment, and somatic practices, including: TRE (Tension, Stress and Trauma Release), polyvagal informed therapy, and SSP (Safe and Sound Protocol).

What Is EMDR Consultation:

EMDR Consultation is intended to help therapists continue to learn and improve in their use of EMDR. Therapists who have completed all requirements for Basic Training can meet with an EMDRIA Approved Consultant (AC) or an EMDRIA Approved Consultant in Training (CIT) for consultation.

EMDR Consultation is required to be an EMDRIA Certified Therapist and can also be used for ongoing guidance and support. The Consultant functions as an educator and mentor and the purpose is to enhance the therapist’s ongoing professional role and use of EMDR. Consultation is not supervision, in that it is not regulated by professional Boards and is collaborative rather than directive.

What Happens During Consultation:

During EMDR Consultation, you will meet individually or in small groups and present your case or questions. The Consultant will offer feedback, reflection, and additional learning materials or resources as needed. You will do at least one Case Study, incorporating all 3 Prongs and  8 Phases of EMDR and demonstrating your ability to maintain fidelity to the standard EMDR model.

The consultee is expected to bring case material to each session, including experiences providing EMDR and questions or stuck points, and demonstration – using video or a verbatim transcript – of an EMDR session with a client.

How Much is Consultation:

Individual consultation is $100 an hour and group consultation is $50 an hour.

EMDR Consultation for Certification:

To apply to be an EMDRIA Certified Therapist, you need 20 hours of consultation (in addition to the 10 hours you received in Basic Training). An AC can provide all 20 hours, and 10 of these may be group. A CIT can provide up to 15 hours of the required 20. There are additional requirements for Certification and you can learn more here: EMDR Certification.
