Oregon CSWA Supervision

Completing your MSW and passing the licensure exam are huge accomplishments, and the first step towards independent practice. Starting out in the field can be exciting and terrifying at the same time. You spend all of your time on clinical reading and training, have a million questions, feel like an imposter daily, and hope you aren’t breaking the people you work with. A good clinical supervisor can help validate and normalize your excitement and overwhelm and guide you to increased confidence and competence.

Jennifer Vandegriff, LCSW is an Oregon BLSW approved supervisor, as well as an EMDRIA Certified EMDR Therapist and Consultant in Training specializing in integrated trauma treatment for women. She has advanced training in perinatal mood and anxiety disorders, structural dissociation, Women Centered ADHD Treatment, and somatic practices, including: TRE (Tension, Stress and Trauma Release), polyvagal informed therapy, and SSP (Safe and Sound Protocol). Jennifer has been a social worker since 1998 and received her Bachelors and Masters degrees in Social Work from Arizona State University. Jennifer has been an LCSW since 2019 and owned a group practice for six years, before going back to solo practice.

What Is CSWA Supervision:

Clinical supervision is a collaborative process between a seasoned LCSW and a CSWA that allows for growth and support, while assisting new therapists with connecting what they learned in school to direct practice.

Oregon has the following requirements for CSWA Candidates (also known as Associate Therapists) in order to become independently licensed, which means you can practice on your own:

  • 3,500 total work hours

  • 2,000 out of the 3,500 are required to be direct client hours

  • 100 total supervision hours

  • 50 out of 100 are required to be individual supervision

  • And a minimum of 24 months supervised clinical experience

The goals of clinical supervision are to promote and monitor professional growth, assure safe practice and the welfare of clients, empower critical thinking and problem solving, and to ensure new therapists understand and are providing ethical treatment.

What Happens During Clinical Supervision:

During supervision, Oregon CSWA Candidates meet individually, or in a group, with their clinical supervisor. We will staff cases, discuss questions and ethical concerns from recent cases or experiences, explore recent trainings or modalities, and role play or discuss potential solutions to stuck points and learning opportunities. You will also be required to provide audio or video of sessions, in order to be observed in a clinical setting. Your supervisor will offer feedback, guidance, reflection, and additional learning materials or resources as needed.

How Much is Consultation:

Individual consultation is $100 an hour.
